Like many supermini hatchbacks, the five-door Mazda 2 strikes a balance between performance and efficiency. The skyactiv petrol engine keeps fuel economy good and running costs low, and although the rear seat space is more cramped than in rivals of the same class, this five-door hatchback still has enough to compete with the likes of the Ford Fiesta, the Volkswagen Polo and the Citroen C3. Specs-wise, the Mazda 2 is no slouch but it's no speedster either, with a top speed of 120mph and a 0-60mph time of nearly 10 seconds. For the environmentally-conscious among you, the vehicle is also offered as a self-charging hybrid. Confusingly, it's essentially just a rebadged Toyota Yaris. Lagging behind in electric technology of its own, the firm opted for a quicker solution by building on their partnership with Toyota to produce this hybrid. It comes in three trim levels (Pure, Agile, Select) and is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine twinned with a 59kWh electric motor.
